PREVENTION

The cure for Dementia in an ongoing battle for medical research. Some uncontrollable risk factors for dementia include age and genetics. However, medical researchers are relentless in their effort to identify other risk factors that affect the brain in order to help prevent dementia. 

Incorporating healthy lifestyle choices and stimulating cognitive abilities might decrease the risk of cognitive deterioration and dementia. Some generic strategies that are useful when trying to prevent dementia include: 

  • Staying mentally alert by learning new hobbies, reading, playing games like Sudoku or Scrabble or similar, or solving crossword puzzles

  • Listening or Playing Music

  • Staying socially involved in the community

  • Avoiding smoking  

  • Regular exercise 

  • Maintaining a healthy weight 

  • Having a balanced diet 

  • Managing health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol
